I used the word "penultimate" to refer to the second to last tone in a cantus firmus, and my teacher didn't know what it meant. And then he kept referring to penultimate notes on the board, and then he used it when correcting my paper, and I thought maybe he was making fun of me, but now it's even on his tests. He likes that word.
