My cowardice paid off. The nice receptionist who I feel comfortable speaking openly with called about the pizza party and so I asked if the guy who scares me was in the office and he WASN'T so I got to ask her to let him know my availability so I never had to muster up the courage to make the call. I don't think that's technically winning, but it's a relief.
